The Shark Tank Pitch

Raven Thomas was a stay-at-home mother in Dallas, Texas who had built her artisanal chocolate pretzel business entirely out of her home kitchen over three years before arriving for Season 3 Episode 6. Her Painted Pretzels were handcrafted chocolate-covered pretzel rods decorated with elaborate hand-painted chocolate designs – swirled colors, themed patterns, custom monograms, and seasonal decorations that transformed a simple snack into a premium giftable food product.

Thomas had developed a genuine artisan craft, and the pretzels she brought into the Tank immediately impressed the panel with their visual appeal and taste. Her story was equally compelling: she had turned down a $2 million purchase order from Sam's Club because she lacked the production infrastructure to fulfill it without sacrificing the handcrafted quality that defined her brand, and had been similarly unable to fulfill an initial inquiry from Neiman Marcus for the same reason.

These were the best possible entrepreneurial problems – too much potential demand – and the Sharks found the situation genuinely compelling as evidence of market validation. Her annual sales had reached $60,000 through home production alone, and she had refined her process to consistent professional quality but urgently needed commercial kitchen space and manufacturing support to handle volume orders.

Seeking $100,000 for 25% equity, Thomas fielded sharp questions: Kevin O'Leary raised concerns about recipe proprietary nature and competition, while Lori Greiner questioned whether Thomas's emotional attachment to handcrafting would impede the industrialization required for scale. But Mark Cuban was moved by what he described as Thomas's 'heart and soul' – her authentic passion and community roots – and offered the full $100,000 for 25% with promises of distribution through his Landmark Theatres and sports venue partnerships.

Where Are They Now?

Thomas accepted Cuban's deal and initially experienced significant success, leasing commercial kitchen space and partnering with candy factories for large orders. The Painted Pretzels gained placement in both Neiman Marcus and SAM's Club, plus strong Amazon sales.

Raven credited Mark Cuban's mentorship as crucial to her progress, appearing in a follow-up segment in episode 417. By 2023, the company was generating over $1 million in annual sales with corporate clients and distribution through Cuban's Landmark theaters.

However, despite this apparent success, customer service issues plagued the business throughout its existence, with numerous complaints about delayed orders, poor communication, and unfulfilled promises. The company permanently closed in April 2024, and Raven transitioned to working as Director of Business Development at Neubloc, a technology company.
