The Shark Tank Pitch
Pet industry veterans AJ Crook and Brett Maiolfi discovered that even the highest-quality dog food could become monotonous for their four-legged customers, leading them to develop Shake It Pup, an innovative line of human-grade seasonings designed to transform any dog's mealtime into a culinary adventure. Building on their success with Snap Wag, a craft dog food company they launched in 2016, the entrepreneurial duo recognized that pet parents wanted to provide variety and excitement in their dogs' diets without compromising nutritional integrity or switching between different food brands.
Their breakthrough solution came in the form of easy-to-use dry seasonings that could be sprinkled onto any wet or dry dog food, requiring just a dash of water to create an aromatic and appetizing meal that would make even the pickiest eaters eagerly approach their bowls. The Shake It Pup product line featured ten carefully crafted flavors including Bae'con and Eggs, Barkin BBQ, Slammin Salmon, Turkey Feast, Pizza My Heart, Peanut Butter Belly, Charcuterie, Digestion Power Broth, Bone & Joint Power Broth, and Skin & Coat Power Broth, each formulated with functional ingredients that provided both taste enhancement and targeted health benefits.
Each 4.5-ounce bottle retailed for $12.99 and contained enough seasoning to transform dozens of meals, offering pet parents an affordable way to add variety to their dogs' diets while supporting different aspects of canine health through specialized nutritional supplements. The founders' deep understanding of the pet food industry, combined with their commitment to human-grade ingredients and functional nutrition, positioned Shake It Pup to create an entirely new product category in the rapidly expanding pet care market.
Seeking $100,000 for 10% equity and valuing their innovative pet nutrition company at $1 million, AJ and Brett entered Season 11 with $105,000 in first-year sales while building a business around the simple principle that dogs deserved the same meal variety and excitement that humans enjoyed in their own dining experiences.
Where Are They Now?
Mark Cuban recognized the potential in Shake It Pup's innovative approach to pet nutrition and secured a deal for $100,000 for 25% equity, believing that his investment and guidance could help the company navigate the competitive pet food market while leveraging his successful experience with Wild Earth dog food company. The partnership with Cuban initially appeared promising as it provided credibility and resources that could accelerate growth in a product category that didn't previously exist, while offering access to distribution networks and retail connections that would be crucial for scaling operations beyond direct-to-consumer sales.
However, like many Shark Tank deals, the agreement with Cuban ultimately failed to close during due diligence, leaving the founders to pursue their business goals independently while facing the operational challenges that plague many small pet food companies in an increasingly competitive marketplace. Following their television appearance, the company experienced internal challenges when AJ Crook departed from the business in July 2021, prompting Brett Maiolfi to rebrand the operation back to Snap Wag, the original craft dog food company he had been operating since 2016.
Despite the initial promise and validation from their Shark Tank appearance, the complexities of maintaining inventory, securing co-packing relationships, and competing against established pet food brands ultimately proved overwhelming for the small startup. Our research shows that Shake It Pup is no longer in business, with the company having ceased operations and discontinued sales on Amazon and other platforms by late 2021, demonstrating that even innovative products addressing genuine pet care needs can struggle to achieve sustainable growth in markets where operational challenges and capital requirements often overwhelm passionate entrepreneurs regardless of their industry experience or television exposure.
