The Shark Tank Pitch
R1SE Education & Recreation appeared on Shark Tank with founders Trevor Szafranski and Heather Szafranski seeking $300,000 for 10% equity, valuing the company at $3 million. The couple presented R1SE as a hybrid student support business that combines tutoring, mentorship, and supervised recreation in a premium after-school environment designed to help both children and working families.
During the pitch, Trevor explained that the concept grew from his 15 years in education and from seeing that many students needed a place where academic help felt motivating rather than burdensome. The model allows students to complete homework, prepare for tests, and build leadership habits before earning access to recreation spaces such as gaming lounges, movie rooms, art areas, and activity zones that make the experience feel rewarding rather than corrective.
The sharks responded strongly to the concept because it addressed both educational outcomes and childcare demand. Trevor shared that each facility was generating roughly $600,000 in annual gross revenue with net margins around 21%, showing that the model had already moved beyond an early startup phase.
Daymond John praised the business structure, while Kevin O'Leary showed interest before backing out over concerns about long-term scale and profitability. Barbara Corcoran ultimately connected with both the mission and the business fundamentals, offering $300,000 for 15% equity with an expectation of repayment within three years, which the founders accepted.

Where Are They Now?
Since appearing on Shark Tank, R1SE Education & Recreation has entered a stronger expansion phase with both increased public visibility and continued regional growth across Michigan. The company continues operating successful locations in Freeland and Midland, serving approximately 120 students daily through before-school, after-school, and enrichment programming.
A third facility in Frankenmuth is under construction, and the founders have publicly stated that broader expansion across the Midwest is part of their long-term strategy. Our team found that one of R1SE’s strongest post-show advantages is that the business was already operating with established local demand before national television exposure, meaning the deal accelerated momentum rather than creating it from scratch.
In addition to core tutoring and mentoring, R1SE has continued broadening its enrichment catalog with programs such as Jedi Training, Sign Language, Cookie Decorating, DJ instruction, Public Speaking, and high school-focused academic sessions, helping differentiate the business from traditional tutoring centers. The facilities also maintain a strong recreational identity through features like a ninja climbing gym, movie theater, video game lounge, art studio, and tech lab, which remain central to student retention and family appeal.
With approximately 35 employees and projected staffing growth as new locations open, R1SE appears positioned less as a simple tutoring company and more as a scalable education-and-childcare hybrid built around community trust, structured support, and premium family convenience.
