Shark Tank Episode Details
The Shark Tank Pitch
Aviv Grill was a San Francisco-based entrepreneur who had built MisoMedia around a genuinely ambitious vision: using smartphone and tablet technology to make music education fundamentally more interactive, adaptive, and engaging than traditional methods allowed. The company's core product was an app that used real-time audio analysis – actually listening to what the student played – to compare it against correct notes and rhythms and provide immediate feedback that a passive video lesson could never deliver.
The system covered piano and guitar instruction with a notation-based visual interface that showed students exactly where they were and what needed correction in real time. His Season 3 Episode 9 pitch featured a live appearance by singer-songwriter Ingrid Michaelson, who performed a brief demonstration of the app's interactive teaching capability, lending both musical credibility and genuine personality to what might otherwise have been a dry technology demonstration.
Grill sought $300,000 for 5% equity at a $6 million valuation, placing himself among Season 3's most optimistically valued entrepreneurs. After questioning on the technology's differentiation and competitive dynamics of the app market, Mark Cuban emerged as the exclusive deal-maker, recognizing both the genuine technology capability and his own background as a technology investor – offering $300,000 for 8% equity, a slight adjustment from the ask, which Grill accepted.
Where Are They Now?
Despite securing Mark Cuban's $300,000 investment, MisoMedia ultimately ceased operations after failing to achieve sustainable growth in the music education app market. The company was unable to translate Cuban's backing into durable user acquisition and revenue, facing stiff competition from established music education platforms and the high cost of retaining engaged learners on mobile.
Like many early education-tech companies, the monetization model proved elusive. The founder Aviv Grill has since moved on to other ventures in the tech industry, and the MisoMedia apps are no longer available for download.
