Shark Tank Episode Details
The Shark Tank Pitch
Gobie H2O appeared on Shark Tank Season 4 as an innovative water filtration company created by former industrial designer and inventor Rusty Allen, who developed a reusable filtered water bottle designed to address the environmental crisis of over 50 million plastic water bottles being discarded daily in the United States. Allen leveraged his professional design expertise to create a premium water bottle from the highest grade, BPA-free plastic featuring several innovative elements that set it apart from competitors in the crowded water bottle market.
The patented design included a unique flexible diaphragm that allowed users to squeeze water through the filter for improved filtration pressure, an extra-large cap for easy filling and cleaning, and an ergonomically shaped mouthpiece designed to fit comfortably in the human mouth. The bottle's advanced filtration system could remove 99.99% of contaminants, with replacement filters capable of filtering 100 gallons of water at a cost of just $10, making it a economically superior alternative to purchasing bottled water.
Allen had achieved $285,000 in total sales over 17 months, with unit economics showing $30 retail price against $10 manufacturing cost, demonstrating healthy margins. The product addressed both environmental sustainability concerns and consumer cost savings, as using a Gobie H2O bottle instead of purchasing bottled water could save hundreds of dollars annually.
Allen sought $300,000 for 10% equity, valuing his company at $3 million, with plans to scale production and expand retail distribution in the competitive water filtration market.
Where Are They Now?
Gobie H2O secured a conditional deal with Daymond John for $300,000 in exchange for 40% equity, with John's investment contingent on securing distribution in a major big box retailer, recognizing both the product's potential and the challenges of competing in the saturated water bottle market. Initially, the partnership appeared promising, with John tweeting praise for Allen's collaborative approach and calling him 'a winner,' suggesting optimistic prospects for the business relationship.
However, the company struggled to overcome the fundamental challenges that other Sharks had identified during the pitch, particularly the intense competition in water filtration and the difficulty of differentiating in a market with numerous similar products. Despite the initial positive momentum and John's mentorship, Gobie H2O faced mounting operational challenges that ultimately proved insurmountable.
Customer service issues began emerging, with multiple complaints about poor support and product availability problems, including chronic 'sold out' status for replacement filters that left existing customers unable to continue using their bottles. By August 2021, the company's website had gone dark, social media accounts had been inactive since November 2020, and the product became 'currently unavailable' on Amazon, indicating complete business failure.
Allen pivoted to a new venture called Happi Canine, which sells fish oil-enriched CBD supplements for dogs, demonstrating his continued entrepreneurial spirit but also confirming that Gobie H2O had been abandoned. As of 2024, Gobie H2O remains completely out of business, representing another example of how even products with solid design and initial traction can fail due to execution challenges and market competition.
