The Shark Tank Pitch

Cool Wraps appeared on Shark Tank Season 4 as a gift wrapping solution company created by Jeffrey Miller, who developed innovative shrink-wrap gift bags designed to solve the common problem of difficult and time-consuming gift wrapping. The product was specifically designed for people who lacked gift-wrapping skills or simply wanted a quick, professional-looking solution for oddly-shaped gifts that were difficult to wrap with traditional paper and tape.

The Cool Wraps system worked by sliding any gift, regardless of shape or size, into a specially designed shrink-wrap bag and then using a standard hair dryer to apply heat, causing the bag to shrink and conform perfectly to the gift's contours, creating a wrinkle-free, professional appearance. Miller had previously brought the product to market ten years earlier with a business partner, but that partnership dissolved when his partner was unwilling to provide collateral for necessary business loans.

The product had proven market demand through previous QVC appearances and 'As Seen on TV' commercials, with Miller targeting gift stores, retail displays, and fundraising markets. The bags could be branded for specific stores and were designed for retail display packaging.

Miller sought $100,000 for 40% equity, valuing his company at $250,000, though his presentation skills proved to be a significant weakness during the pitch.

Where Are They Now?

Cool Wraps secured a deal with Mark Cuban for $250,000 with a 3% royalty, significantly more than Miller's original ask, after Cuban recognized the product's potential despite Miller's poor presentation skills.

However, the deal never actually closed, and the company struggled to capitalize on the typical 'Shark Tank effect' that launches products into success. Initially, customers were disappointed to find the product nearly impossible to purchase online following the show's airing, indicating poor preparation for the post-show demand surge.

The company experienced mixed results over the following years, with periods of strong web presence alternating with periods of unavailability and poor customer service. By 2015, Cool Wraps had established a stronger online presence and was actively selling products, but the momentum was never fully sustained.

The company later pivoted to a distributor-focused business model, claiming broad distribution in Europe and the Middle East with $5 million in annual revenue by 2022.

However, by August 2021, the company's website was down and social media had not been updated for seven years, indicating significant operational problems. As of 2024, Cool Wraps is completely out of business, representing a cautionary tale of how poor execution and inability to capitalize on television exposure can doom even products with genuine market potential and initial investor backing.
